beach finds
In my small clear vase
are pieces of your ocean glass,
round and worn from sand and from
the bruising of seas
who brought them here.
Smooth and coldish,
they burn in primal color and
in shades of mottled white.
You had looked for blue.

The sea glass is from the Strait of Juan de Fuca near Seattle. As I stood on the shore and held the pieces in my hands, I wondered what their backstories had been—which islands they drifted from, what kitchens and lives they served a century or more ago. The most rare and precious seaglass color is cobalt blue; all of the colors and shapes were beautiful to me.

My (boy)friend wanted the color that was the hardest to find and threw the others back to the beach. As it turned out I was his green, brown, white, and colorless glass
